Robotic Hair Transplant
Although many machines like Neograft/HAARTs have been marketed as robotic machines, they are nothing but a manual extraction with suction processes. They have been falsely marketed as a robotic machines. The ARTAS, which has a robotic arm for extraction of grafts with its software based technology to assess the direction of follicles and the number of follicles being extracted, it is not yet developed to an extent to surpass the expertise and precision of manual surgeon based extraction process.
Drawbacks:
1) It is possible to extract only 1500 to 2000 grafts in a single session.
2) It keeps the grafts out of the body for 2 to 4 hours depending upon the length of the procedure.
3) It used punches of wider calibre thereby causing fine scarring
4) Graft transection rates are high upto 15-20 %
5) It is very expensive
6) The working cost for the centre is very high.
Overall, current evidence status suggests that manual extraction by the surgeon is still superior to the currently available robotic hair transplant machines. In near future it is expected that these technologies will get cheaper and better.
