Platelet rich plasma, as the name suggests,it is a concentrated preparation of cells of our body, named platelets. Platelets are naturally available in the human blood and characteris-tically contain lot of growth factors which are helpful for growth of hair. It contains a cocktail of growth factors including Epidermal growth factor (EGF), Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF),Platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), Transforming growth factor -beta(TGF-b), fibroblast growth factor-2 (FGF-2), insulin like growth factor (IGF). It promotes blood vessel growth, cell replication, hair growth. These growth act on the hair follicles to make them thicker and better.
1) Blood is withdrawn from a patient’s arm by syringe 2) The tubes containing withdrawn blood are placed in a centrifuge and spun for a speci-fied period of time. 3) The centrifuge separatedthe red and white blood cells from the platelets and concentrates them at various levels in the tubes. The platelet concentrate is separated and is expected to be concentrated roughly by 5 to 8 times. This concen-trated platelet suspension is then injected in areas of hair thinning and hair loss.
PRP is one of those evidence based therapies at present, which has been shown to improve the hair fall to a significant level and increase the overall density by increasing the thickness of the hair follicles. With the experience of the surgeon at the centre, 70 to 80 % patients respond very well to these sessions. (Evidence level E)
In most cases the PRP is known to reduce hair fall within 1 to 3 sessions, but improving the density require atleast 3 to 6 sessions.
It is done at an interval of 4 wks normally, but can be done anytime after 2 weeks at doctors discretion. The session takes normally 60 to 90 minutes for completion. .
Hair disorders are slow to respond, normally it take 6 weeks to start showing up there action.Patients start feeling a change at 3 months, but the actual density is expected to peak at a period of 6 months whenpatient undergoes atleast 3 to 4 sessions consecutively.
PRP is done under local anaesthesia, and is done at ease without too much pain for the patient under supervision of the doctor..
PRP is taken from patients own blood and carries minimal risk of any side effects. The most common side effects include heaviness of head which persists for few hours and mild prickling sensation the next day.
There is no change in the working schedule of the patient, and he/she can carry out all day activities as normally as before. There is no need for any topical or oral antibiotics after the procedure.
Seeing the hair fall and hair thinning, it is at doctors discretion and to choose if it is the right procedure for you or not, so it is important to visit a dermatologist.
No. The hair thinning can again happen over months to years depending upon patients hair thinning process, but does not happen overnight or very soon after the procedure. Maintenance sessions might be needed.
